Does the turtle use sand or coconut soil for winter?
Turtles can spend the winter with sand or coconut soil, but coconut soil may become moldy, so sand is better. The reason why we need to prepare these things is for better heat preservation and moisturizing. The turtle hibernates to resist low temperatures. If the temperature is lower than 5 ℃, the turtle’s survival will also be affected. So the turtle usually drills into sand or coconut soil and sprays water regularly to keep the environment moist.
What should we do before turtle hibernation?
1. Supplemental nutrition: Before hibernation, the first thing to do is to supplement food. Usually, after autumn, the turtle will start to increase its feeding. It needs to be fed twice a day so that it can accumulate some energy, which can be consumed slowly during hibernation. If not, the turtle may not wake up after hibernation.
2. Prepare sand: In order to ensure the safety of the turtle during hibernation, it is better to prepare sand so that it can get inside, and avoid damage from the low temperature outside. It should be noted that the sand must be disinfected before use, so as to prevent bacteria from harming its health.
3. Stop feeding and soaking in water: The turtle needs to stop feeding two weeks before hibernation. At this time, it needs to stop feeding to make it enter hibernation. In addition, you should also give it bubble water so that it can empty its intestines and stomach, so as to prevent feces from being excreted after a winter.
